Giving new legitimacy to the study of geoengineering, the Royal Society announced yesterday that it would conduct a large-scale review of the various proposed planetary engineering schemes, such as iron fertilization and space mirrors, reports The Guardian’s Alok Jha. I liked this cartoon by High Moon over at Japan for Sustainability. I never thought about it quite this way before. Ranking the 3 Rs in order of importance, they give Reduce the first place, followed by Reuse and a third place for Recycle. Or should they all rank the same? JFS also has a cute website for kids, called Create Your Future. Do have a look!…

Biking in Mexico City? No, it’s not an extreme sport for thrill-seekers. It’s a weekend pastime for families thanks to a program called Muevete en Bici program, or Get on Your Bicycle. Mayor Marcelo Ebrard’s initiative, launched one year ago, closes approximate 6.2 miles (10 kilometers) of major thoroughfares to car traffic, temporarily transforming the traffic-clogged streets into a public p…

The White House is working to push through one last wave of deregulation before President Bush leaves office in January, according to an article in the Washington Post. According to the article, these steps are controversial and could be very difficult for the next president to undo.
Constraints on power plants, mines and farms are on the list for easing, as well as obstacles to commercial fishing. But the list doesn’t end there. The White House is also looking to ease controls on chemicals that contribute to global warming, to relax drinking water standards and to lift a key restriction on mountain coal mining. Also on the table are controls on coal-fired plants near national parks and controls on emissions from chemical factories and oil refineries.
As many as 90 of these relaxed rules are in the works. Once such rules take effect, they can’t just be swept away by a new president; they can only be lifted through very lengthy and laborious procedures. John Walke of the National Resources Defense Council states that these rules “will force Americans to choke on dirtier air for years to come, unless Congress or the new administration reverses these eleventh-hour abuses.”
White House takes one last push to loosen restrictions on pollution originally appeared on Green Daily on Fri, 31 Oct 2008 18:12:00 EST 0. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

ON STUCCO WORK IN DAMP PLACES, AND ON THE DECORATION OF DINING ROOMS
1 Just then Callimachus, whom the Athenians called [Greek:
katatęxitechnos] for the refinement and delicacy of his artistic
work, passed by this tomb and observed the basket with the tender
young leaves growing round it Circles are described upon it, marking the limits of the months.

way that if a carpenter's square be placed in the hollow of a flute and
turned, the arm will touch the corners of the fillets on the right and
left, and the tip of the square may keep touching some point in the
concave surface as it moves through it When the
stuff of which it is formed is thin, it not only cracks but also soon
fades; when, however, it has a solid foundation of sand mortar and of
marble, thickly and compactly applied, it is not only brilliant after
being subjected to repeated polishings, but also reflects from its
surface a clear image of the beholder.
