Wealthy Co-founder of “Lush” is Quirky, But Green

Filed under: Activism, Natural Body Care

Even if you’re not a big bubble bath fan, you probably have heard of Lush, the eco-friendly cosmetic and soap company. Last August the employees in 24 stores in the US worked in the nude to demonstrate the company’s philosophy about unnecessary packaging.

Started in 1995 by Brit Mark Constantine and his wife, Mo, the company now has over 600 stores in 44 countries, and Constantine is a multi-millionaire. He’s also passionate about green causes. Sometimes the combination of global CEO and fervent environmentalist are difficult to reconcile.

For example, he doesn’t own a car, and bikes to work every day. But he also has to fly all over the world, all the time, to oversee his business.

Rather than go the boring route of carbon offsets, Constantine funds anti-aviation activists Plane Stupid, the group that staged a sit in on the runway at Stansted Airport in London. He also paid for their legal fees following that stunt.

He also makes sure his company lives by his green rules, with no animal testing and of course, the packaging-free distribution which cuts down on both the carbon footprint and manufacturing costs.

You have to give it to the guy, he’s quirkier than your average CEO. For more interesting details, like why he stopped being a vegan check out the Reuters story here.

classroomOver the past year I have really enjoyed learning more about green architecture and eco-friendly design for homes and offices alike. But it’s exciting to see that this philosophy is being applied to classrooms as well! Talk about teaching our young in the best environment possible. Project FROG has built two classrooms, with many more being ordered, using their FROG Zero system of modular construction which includes: 80% post consumer materials, abundant natural light, no VOC’s, 100% recyclable composition, each classroom will be built to a minimum of LEED Silver standards and will cost 25% less than comparable spaces. The gallery will bring the image to light for you better than I can in words.

I already suggested turning your old greeting cards into gift tags, but how about boxes, stars, animals and bookmarks too?

Over at Crafting a Green World there is a round-up of all kinds of good craft projects for old greeting cards. Simple things like a bookmark to much more complicated ideas like a 3D star requiring several cards to create. If the people you know have not gone digital in the greeting card department, you should have plenty of raw materials for these projects.

It might be a good project for a quiet New Year’s Eve, or something to file away for next year. Or, if like me, you only got about six Christmas cards, you can pack them away until next year when you might get a few more and have enough for some projects.
