Attention creative Americans and aspiring filmmakers who are passionate about climate change and looking to make a difference: a new video competition from Brighter Planet and 1Sky gives everybody a chance to win some money (as much as $3000!), get 15 minutes of fame, and (most importantly) make a statement by potentially inspiring the next President to take bold environmental action.
To enter all you have to do is upload a 30 or 60 second video about climate change to this website by September 22nd. The videos will be judged by Maggie Gyllenhaal (and a panel of others) with the winners being announced September 29th.

While visiting the U.K. a few weeks ago, I was struck by two things: the sheer amount of people on every street corner—something like 12 million in London alone—and the number of cyclists. While hardly reaching Dutch levels, Londoners are increasingly mounting bikes in effort to curb traveling time and costs, reduce carbon emissions and, of course, work off the seemingly endless pints and fish and chips.
But here’s the rub: if you live in a big city, chances are you’re working with limited storage space, so simply locking up your bike in a shed isn’t an option, and leaving it locked to a fence makes it vulnerable to rust and theft. So what are the options for indoor storage—options that don’t clash too much with the décor? After all, city living is meant to be a mix of style and substance.
Luckily, there are more options these days than the simple-but-ugly large S-hook mounted into the ceiling. The Art of Storage is one of many retailers now selling innovative storage units, including designs specifically made for interiors, both freestanding and attached to a wall.
Longtime cycling retailer Delta also offers cool storage solutions, including this one with a built-in shelf for bike accessories.
Those with a DIY sensibility can build their own system, made as pretty or utilitarian as you wish. The beauty of these systems is that they don’t have to be confined to bike usage — tuck away seasonal clothes, perhaps some luggage, or make your own book storage system.

Researchers are constantly on the look-out for new materials that can store or use up CO2, or new methods to sequester it. Carbon Sense Solutions has created an accelerated curing process for the creation of precast concrete, which it claims will suck up as much as 1% of all CO2 emissions in the atmosphere annually.
Concrete carbonation – the sucking up of CO2 by concrete as it cures – occurs naturally, but Carbon Sense Solutions says its faster curing method gets concrete to suck up more CO2 in a way that uses off-the-shelf technology that can be slapped on to their existing equipment. The process also uses 30% to 40% less energy to manufacture. The lower amount of energy used and the avoidance of expensive new equipment makes the wonder-concrete cheaper, and more profitable. Additional positive byproducts of the method are that the concrete is more durable, and more resistant to shrinking, cracking and water absorption.
While it sounds miracle cure-ish, it isn’t, necessarily. The company says that a plant could have a line of concrete not suitable for this carbonation process, and so the CO2 emitted to create it can be pumped into their CO2 sequestering concrete line, potentially becoming a net-zero CO2 emitter. The numbers for that don’t seem to easily line up, though it’s a nice dream. Concrete production creates about 5% of global CO2 emissions. This new process only soaks up about 1% percent of that. So, it’s really more of an off-set process than a carbon storage solution. Even so, off-setting 1% of global CO2 emissions annually – or looking at it another way, sequestering 20% of the CO2 created by the concrete production industry – while still creating a material that is the most abundant human-made material on earth is pretty great.
The process is still unproven, but holds a lot of potential for making an impact on CO2 emissions. A pilot plant is planned to go up in Nova Scotia this summer, and we should hear by the end of the year preliminary results.
