Just when you thought the dust was settling on the best wind turbine design, the stakes have gotten higher — or in this case, wider. A new design called the Aerogenerator X (‘X’ to make it sound cooler?) would have a massive span of 275 meters and would produce a whopping ten megawatts of electricity — that’s three times the production capacity of typical modern commercial horizontal axis turbines. The innovative design is compared to a sycamore seed because it rotates on its axis, and it responds to the financial and technological limitations of scaling current three blade horizontal axis turbines for off-shore applications. The green engineering firm ARUP, along with a host of other players, recently concluded a viability study of the new Aerogenerator vertical axis concept.

Seen over at Arch Daily this morning, Germany and China’s captivating German-Chinese House for the Shanghai World expo is a study in bamboo. The two story art building is the only pavilion in the Expo to utilize the extremely renewable and fast growing material as a load-bearing structure. Designed by Markus Heinsdorff in collaboration with MUDI, the art pavilion is the crowning achievement in the two countries’ event series, “Germany and China – Moving Ahead Together.”

The massive BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has spurred scientists and engineers to consider numerous solutions to clean up the slick — from erecting a giant underwater dome to contain the spill to setting it on fire (update: according to the Washington Post, it looks like the Coast Guard is going ahead with their plan to set the oil spill ablaze). But what if the slick could be cleaned up in a way that is totally organic? One very unusual solution calls for the use of mushrooms and hair (yes, mushrooms and hair) to absorb the oil. The technique is tried and true — it was actually used in the Cosco Busan oil spill of ‘07!
