Usually when you read about concentrated solar power, it’s referring to some large project destined for the Mojave Desert, but Syracuse’s Center of Excellence in Environmental and Energy Systems (SyracuseCoE) has set out to prove that this technology can be used in smaller, colder settings.
SyracuseCoE in Syracuse, NY is itself a LEED-platinum-certified, 55,000 square-foot building that serves as a testing ground for renewable energy and efficiency technologies. The south wall of the building is home to a concentrated solar facade that, at first glance, resembles the frosted cube walls found in doctors’ office waiting rooms.
This 8-foot by 8-foot facade houses several clear pyramid lenses that track the sun and concentrate the rays onto high-efficiency PV cells. Extra energy not converted to electricity is used for heating water and radiant heat in the building. And because it’s made up of clear panels, it also adds natural lighting indoors. You can watch […]

NoMix Toilet. Photo: Flickr Technological Innovations in the Bathroom? You Bet!
Being green is all about solving problems and grabbing overlooked opportunities. It turns out that there’s such a double-win in most bathrooms around the world; if we had “NoMix” toilets that separate urine from solid waste, municipal wastewater plants would have a significantly easier task (and produce more methane to generate electricity), and we could much more easily extract precious nutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen for use as fertilizer (instead of using fossil fuels). So what’s stopping us from going NoMix?…Read the full story on TreeHugger

Due to a bad drought that’s dried up the hydroelectric plants that supply more than two-thirds of its power, Venezuela has been suffering through its worst energy crisis in the last 50 years. President Hugo Chavez’s solution? Change all the light bulbs! Well, that might not be the only action the country is taking (they’ve also put electricity rationing into effect) but an army of Venezuelan soldiers has been given direct orders from the president to distribute thousands of Firefly energy-efficient CFL bulbs. The big switcheroo may not make it rain, but the president sure hopes that it can cut the energy his citizens consume in the meantime.

Back before the world lived and worked by electricity, candles were the extent of lighting options. For those who find themselves wishing for simpler times, System Studio Design has found the perfect way to recreate the soft lighting of candles while sticking to the light bulb’s functional design.
The Light Bulb Candle may seem self-explanatory in title, but it should be pointed out that this design isn’t purely aesthetic. Its shape is used to ensure that once the wax is liquefied, it drips down into the base and actually keeps the outer shell intact. The bulb also allows the flame to give off that same soft light offered by a low-wattage bulb.
Perhaps the best aspect of this design, however, is that these candles can fit into the same light socket as a regular light bulb itself. So, there’s no need to stock up on some fancy holders; just unscrew the lights […]
