With consumer interest in greener gadgets on the rise, Apple has refused to include the iPhone in a far-reaching green ranking system for mobile phones in the UK. Most people have a flashlight sitting in a drawer somewhere for use in an emergency… but wouldn’t it be cool if it could serve another purpose instead of standing idly by? Well that’s exactly what this transforming flashlight by designer Jia Dai does — it split opens to become a lamp! The only foreseeable problem is that if you’re constantly using it as a lamp, you might find yourself out of juice when you really need it as a flashlight, but the designer thought of that too — since the device is solar-powered, it constantly recharges in the sun.

Forget about the next iPhone or an iPad as thin as paper, Apple is pedaling in another direction these days. Just a few days ago, the company filed a new patent for an advanced smart bike now in development. Fresh off the drawing boards, and not yet named (but how cool would iCycle be?), the new smart bike will allow cyclists to link up with one another, share pertinent course data, individual health stats and much, much more. So just as Apple’s i-gadgets have dramatically changed the way consumers interact with and experience hand held tech, could the same soon be said for the bicycle?
