Greenpeace Winning the Whale War

According to Greenpeace there are over 4200 tons of whale meat frozen in Japan with no buyers. The government subsidizes the whaling industry there and allows so many whales to be killed a year for “research” purposes. Greenpeace’s Jun Hoshikawa in Japan claims that the whaling industry has ceased to be profitable as the stigma of eating whale meat is too high.

Late last year, Tokyo’s largest whale meat shop, Yushin, was forced to close. Whaling ships are having a hard time filling their crew roster as many refuse to sail again.

Japanese whalers are fighting back against Greenpeace and especially the Sea Shepard’s anti-whaling campaigns. They’ve gone as far as to ask the country of Australia from allowing the Steve Irwin to enter their ports. Somehow I don’t think that Australia is going to comply.

Recently anti-whaling activists Sea Shepherd made the news with their aggressive attacks on Japanese research vessels, pelting the ships with bottles filled with acidic rancid butter.

This dramatic protest was decried as terrorism by Japan, and generally frowned upon by other environmentalists as being too radical to be effective.

With Sea Shepherd in the news, some old confusion linking the organization to Greenpeace has surfaced again. To avoid any negative attention, Greenpeace issued a statement explaining their shared history, and outlining the difference between the two organizations.

Paul Watson, the founder of Sea Shepherd, was a part of the Greenpeace leadership — although not a founder as he sometimes claims — until they kicked him out in 1977.

Basically it sounds like Watson wanted to pursue more aggressive (i.e. violent) tactics than the rest of the group. The disagreement was disruptive to the group, and the other leaders decided to move forward without him, staging their own dramatic but peaceful protests.

This is exactly the kind of schism that anti-environmental groups love, but it sounds like the story here is that it’s a non-story. This all happened thirty years ago!

The important part is that there are two groups, both of whom are against whaling. Whether you agree with the need for violent action or prefer to support the Greenpeace-ful method, killing whales is reprehensible and must stop. The end.

Hey, PETA, take note: this is the kind of activism people can get behind — humorous sarcasm with English accents. Treehugger shared this hysterical video of Greenpeace activists trying to present global energy giant BP with the first annual “Emerald Paintbrush” award.

BP earned this highest of greenwashing honors with a multi-million dollar ad campaign that waxed euphoric over the potential for alternative fuels to save the world. The company then turned around and spent 93% of their operating budget on finding and extracting fossils fuels. Nice hypocrisy, BP!

You get the impression that this sort of thing — a visit from a less than sincere admirer — must happen relatively often at the BP headquarters, since their guards quickly forbade photos, and pushed the Greenpeace crew out the door in about 30 seconds. Then they closed some crazy metal doors that look like anti-terrorist protection.

I wonder if BP will reference the award on their website? Hmmm, maybe not.
