Fertilizer Runoff Linked to Developmental and Reproductive Toxicity

Image: eutrophication&hypoxia’s photostream, Flickr Natural human optimism leads one to hope that hazardous chemicals wastes discarded by humans are broken down in the natural environment, until they are once again harmless. When scientists concern themselves with this process, it is usually to study the extent to which toxic chemicals harm the environment before they are finally degraded, or to measure the impacts of the degradation process, such as Read the full story on TreeHugger

A new IKEA store planned for Centennial, Colorado (just outside Denver) will be heated and cooled by geothermal energy.
IKEA got assistance from the fine scientists at NREL in designing and constructing a geothermal system located under the store’s parking garage. At 500 feet under the ground, 130 pipes will pump liquid that will help to heat or cool the store depending on the time of year (in the summer, ground temperatures will keep the liquid cooler than surface air and vice versa in the winter).
During times of extreme temperatures, the geothermal system won’t be able to get the job done on its own, but during most of the year, the system should be able to maintain comfortable temperatures in the store. IKEA is using this location, which opens next year, as a pilot test for the technology and if it’s successful, the company plans to install similar systems in other […]

Researchers recently discovered a new way to store carbon dioxide and other harmful chemicals using a a powdered, sugar-like substance called “dry water“. According to scientists at the National Meeting of the American Chemical Society, the novel material made from water and silica could potentially store large amounts of CO2.

Scientists at the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters have designed a new fuel cell inspired by the brochial structure of the lungs. The new design requires less of the expensive platinum catalyst while also boosting efficiency.
The fuel cell features channels modeled after brochial tubes that supply hydrogen and oxygen to their respective electrodes. This system spreads the gases more uniformly across the electrodes, which boosts the cell’s efficiency and creates greater surface area so that less platinum is required.
Hydrogen fuel cells are still too cost prohibitive (among other things) for mass production and a lot of that has to do with the platinum catalyst. This design is pretty exciting because it would lower the cost of the fuel cell while also boosting output. That’s a win-win.

Photo via CenCOOS As BP moves to permanently seal the blown-out well that unleashed 5 million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, the focus is turning to the toll of the disaster. It should be said that the true and total toll will not be known for some time, until scientists have had a chance to properly investigate the extent of the damage above and below the sea. But there are some things we can start looking at now: Like the direct numb…Read the full story on TreeHugger
