Looking to add some solar-powered flare to your boring backyard? This gigantic energy-generating flower sculpture by id&@le concepts may be just the ticket. Dubbed the Gul Two, the brightly-hued blossom is outfitted with an array of six 10 x 5 cm solar panels that soak up sunlight throughout the day and store it in a hidden 4-watt battery. Once night falls, the kinetic sculpture erupts in a brilliant LED display that lights up the night with shades of sapphire, emerald, ruby, violet, indigo, and opal.

How affordable are we talking? As little as $600 to $800 per panel, much lower than the astronomical $20,000 to $30,000 for conventional solar systems.
Costs are kept low because these systems are simply plugged directly into your power outlets. More and more retail chains are embracing renewable energy in a bid to cut costs and reduce their carbon footprint. Examples include Wal-Mart installing close to 5300 solar panels at its Apple Valley distribution center in California and Green Depot making their stores LEED-certified. Now IKEA has joined the renewable retail ranks by announcing that a store near Centennial in Denver will be powered by geothermal energy. Thanks to a partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the Denver IKEA store will be the first IKEA store in the United States to be built with geothermal heating and cooling, saving both energy and money.
